When you run the numbers on tuition rates for graduate programs in technology, one clear fact emerges even without much analysis. The cost is substantial.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, as of 2022, the average cost of graduate studies in the United States rang in at $19,749 per year.
Multiply that by the two or three years you can expect to spend studying advanced concepts in AI, and you’re looking at a significant front-end investment.
But that’s exactly what you’d expect for an education that gives you access to what is easily the most revolutionary field to arise from computer science in a generation.
Only schools that live at the leading edge of computer science offer degrees that let you into the universe of artificial intelligence. Coast to coast, just 45 of America’s premier universities were in that category as of late 2023.
Being able to plug in at this level and learn from the best minds in computer science is a unique privilege. And, of course, that’s a level of access and a kind of educational experience that comes at a premium.
And though that fact remains, you can still take steps to select a program that offers an exceptional value, with tuition rates lower than what you might expect to pay. That’s exactly what you’ll get with any of the AI master’s and graduate certificate programs that made our list of affordable options.
A Simple Formula for Finding the Most Affordable AI Graduate Programs in the Country
In a field this new and with so few options currently available in the education marketplace, it can be tough to find degrees in AI, let alone identify the most affordable ones. Still, it’s straightforward enough that human intelligence is definitely up to the task. But just for fun, we employed the help of AI to help us isolate those programs, using it to extract tuition data across the entire set before running it through a simple formula:
First, we compiled a list of all master’s degree and graduate certificate programs in the country with a focus or concentration in artificial intelligence offered through accredited universities.
Then, we split the list into two categories, one for public and the other for private universities. Public and private universities have different funding mechanisms that are reflected in the final costs. While steep residential discounts are available to in-state students attending public schools, there isn’t always a significant cost advantage for international students and those considering options in other states.
We went on to identify the total number of credits in each program and used the per-credit tuition rate to determine the total cost. This presents an accurate figure irrespective of the number of years a program takes to complete, allowing all pacing options to be included in the assessment – accelerated, conventional full-time, and part-time options.
Though the majority of American universities operate on the quarter system, for those that are on the semester system we employed the standard conversion used when transferring in credits: 1.5 quarter credit = 1 semester credit.
Finally, we determined the average cost of these programs in each state, looking at public and private university programs separately. Schools that come in at or below the state average for their category made the cut for our list.
It’s a simple formula, but one that ensures that the price you pay for your master’s degree or graduate certificate is reasonable.
As a rule, the schools offering the most affordable master’s in AI are also the ones offering the lowest cost certificate options. That’s because the per-credit rate for graduate certificates is the same as it is for master’s programs in almost all cases. Though certificates have fewer credits and come in with a lower total cost, this still gave us an in to presenting both options all in one place. Schools that offer either option, or both, are included here.
Where a particular program is the only option in a given state, and by definition at the average and the most affordable, we let you know that as well.
A Strong Value Proposition in AI Education Has to Include More than Just an Affordable Tuition Rate
As you’ll see when you look through the list, low cost doesn’t in any way mean low value. There are some elite schools in this bunch, with expert professors conducting groundbreaking research.
That means that you have some choices to make. AI is a rapidly expanding field with a lot of different exciting areas of research and specialization. You may be getting into the field with a particular goal or idea you want to explore. You’ll want to make sure you are attending a school that supports that goal.
So we give you all the data you need to make a first pass approximation at your ideal choice, even among the constellation of affordable programs on this list. For the programs featured here, you’ll find information like:
- Other related AI-focused degree programs at the school
- Membership in major academic or research organizations
- On-campus or virtual research centers run by the university in AI or computer science
- Special accolades or high rankings by relevant evaluating bodies
- Notable industry collaborations
- Big grants received to fund AI research and education
And naturally, we touch on all the basic points that factor into selecting a program that’s going to be a good fit, providing the low-down on essential elements of the degree like whether it’s offered on-campus, or in a hybrid or online formats. We also list any specialty tracks or focus areas that are offered as part of the program.
On top of that, we provide a thumbnail sketch to give you the highlights and a sense of the culture at each school. You may be price sensitive, but you are still looking for a university where you will find a good fit for your goals and potential.
These schools can deliver all that and more, and all at an affordable price. Click any of the links to see more, and to get started on a career that will change the world.
